63: THE HAUNTING OF KATRINA WEIDMAN

LISTEN TO EPISODE 63:

THE HAUNTING OF KATRINA WEIDMAN

Horror authors T. Fox Dunham (Horror Writers Association) & Phil Thomas have an extraordinary guest on episode 64, part of their countdown to Halloween 2017. Katrina Weidman joins them for a long interview during the show to talk about her lifelong pursuit of the paranormal. Katrina was part of Paranormal State on A&E and is now co-host of the television show, Paranormal Lockdown which is going into its third season on Destination America.

From her WEBSITE:

“I’ve always had a passion for the supernatural and a desire to seek out the unknown! Growing up in haunted houses will kind of do that to you. As a child, I poured over any information I could find on the paranormal. I was fascinated that there were other houses like mine and wanted to know as much as I could. Ghosts, UFOs, cryptos, you name it, I was fascinated! I’m often asked, “How in the world did you become a paranormal investigator?” Honestly, I feel like it chose me.”

“Fast forward a few years to a trip to The Pennsylvania State University that changed everything! I dropped a friend off at the main campus one summer weekend, and the minute my feet hit the pavement, I had an overwhelming feeling that I needed to be there. Not being the academic type, I decided I had better pay attention to this feeling. The day I got back to my hometown, I signed up for classes at the local community college. It was there that I overcame the harsh words from that teacher long ago. I transferred to Penn State, and during my studies, my passion for the paranormal grew even more. As luck would have it, there was a paranormal club on campus, the world-renown Paranormal Research Society (PRS). I trained with them and later worked as their case manager, interviewing thousands of eyewitnesses to the unknown. This led to the opportunity to co-host A&E’s hit docu-drama “Paranormal State” (2007-2011), which chronicled the work of PRS. I then became the host for Chiller’s “Real Fear: The Truth Behind the Movies,” which explores the real life terror behind some of the world’s most iconic horror films. I also hosted the follow-up special, “Real Fear: The Truth Behind More Movies,” in 2013. I graduated from Penn State with degrees in Integrative Arts and Theatre with a minor in Music Technology. Take that, third grade teacher! Throughout the year, I lecture at paranormal conferences and events where I discuss my experiences in the field. I’m also the co-founder of Atherton Paranormal, a group aimed at furthering the paranormal field and helping those affected by it. In addition to my work in the paranormal, I’m a performer, a producer, and the lead singer of the band AwayFrom30.”

Katrina joins us to talk about her history in the paranormal, her unique experiences growing up as a haunted child, her work on Paranormal State and what it’s like to be on Paranormal Lockdown. She also shares several frightening ghost stories including the tale of being trapped in the Coal Hole in a haunted site in the UK. It is a scary tale.

Paranormal Lockdown will be going into its third season on Destination America. Paranormal Lockdown is a paranormal reality television series. It is executive produced by Nick Groff of Ghost Adventures fame. The series follows Groff and fellow paranormal researcher Katrina Weidman (formerly of Paranormal State) as they confine themselves for 72 straight hours in some of the most haunted locations.

And Fox would love to come cook for them when they’re sequestered to these haunted sites. He was cooking his magic meatloaf while they interviewed. Just ask Phil… amazing stuff.

MERCY BY T. FOX DUNHAM

Fox reads a scene from his horror novel from Blood Bound Books, MERCY. When Fox was 17, he suffered from a rare form of blood cancer, a cell type that had never been treated successfully before. Fox suffered intense chemo therapy and radiation until finally at the dawn of Samhain that year, he survived death and recovered.

T. Fox Dunham has often penned stories about his battle with cancer, a battle that hasn’t stopped throughout his life as its returned, and he wrote MERCY as a metaphor for his horrific violation at the hands of doctors. Mercy is a book about William Saint, a man dying of cancer but even more so dying of regret. He returns to Mercy hospital to discover its been possessed by something evil, a dark force hungry for souls, and he is processed to become edible to the great dark mouth that feeds the great dark heart. Fox reads from a selection of his book.

MERCY LARGE

“Fine! I will look and give you my eyes. Why do I need them anyway? All I see is suffering, mostly my own.”

“You will do this of your own free will? Less damaged?”

He nodded at the Good Doctor. “But I have to do it. I will cut into my own face.” The Good Doctor Sullivan giggled at the idea, delighted by the suggestion. He held the base of his goggles, and he lifted them from his cheeks, revealing the orifices in his skull. At first, the beast man could not look upon his true face, and he turned away.

“See me. You have always known me.”

William Saint is dying of cancer. On most days death seems like a humane alternative to the treatment. Stricken with fever, William is rushed to Mercy—notorious as a place to send the sickest of the poor and uninsured to be forgotten—and finds the hospital in even worse condition than his previous visit. The grounds are unkempt, the foundation is cracking, and like the wild mushrooms sprouting from fissures of decay around it, something is growing inside the hospital. Something dark. It’s feeding on the sickness and sustaining itself on the staff, changing them. And now it wants Willie.

THE ZOMBIE DANDIES

We play another great punk Halloween song from the French band, The Zombie Dandies. The Friendly Monster Shop is a great song for the spooky season. We love these guys!

The Zombie Dandies are a musical project from Normandy, France. The story of the group started in 2011, when two bored ghouls, Marty Dandy (Drums, Bass, Guitar & Vocals ) and K1000 Zombie (Guitar & Vocals), woke up from their graves with the unlikely idea of creating a glam-metal-meets-garage-rock musical project.

THE WISH MECHANICS

Find out just who are the Wish Mechanics before answering. Braum effortlessly blends horror, science-fiction, and fantasy in his unique style and vision that transcends genre.

44: BOOGEYMAN

LISTEN TO EPISODE 44: BOOGEYMAN

Every culture has a Boogeyman

Boogeyman is a common allusion to a mythical creature in many cultures used by adults to frighten children into good behavior. This monster has no specific appearance, and conceptions about it can vary drastically from household to household within the same community; in many cases, he has no set appearance in the mind of an adult or child, but is simply a non-specific embodiment of terror. Parents may tell their children that if they misbehave, the bogeyman will get them. Bogeymen may target a specific mischief—for instance, a bogeyman that punishes children who suck their thumbs—or general misbehavior, depending on what purpose needs serving. In some cases, the bogeyman is a nickname for the Devil. Bogeyman tales vary by region. The bogeyman is usually a masculine entity, but can be any gender, or simply be androgynous. (From Wikipedia. Read the full article to learn about this infestation.)

On this episode of What Are You Afraid Of? Horror & Paranormal Show, we interview monster hunter & paranormal investigator, Gaylen Chauncey. It is the first part of a two part series which we continue next week with Episode 45: Whisper Men. Monsters have been haunting Gaylen and her identical twin sister since she was a little girl, and now she haunts them back, seeking out families in trouble and investigating cases of missing children and abuse involving the supernatural. She tells her story to hosts T. Fox Dunham and Phil Thomas, sharing intimate details of her search for her childhood tormentor. In addition, she investigates and cleanses houses with her Virginia based paranormal investigation group, AfterLifeGoesOn Paranormal Group.

GAYLEN CHAUNCEY

“All ghosts, no matter how sweet, are parasites.”

– Gaylen Chauncey

Founder Gaylen Chauncey, is an author of ghost stories based on her real life experiences.  “The Make Believe In The Boogeyman Chronicles”, novel is based on her monster encounters. Tour guide at the haunted St. Albans Sanatorium. She has been interviewed by TV/Radio/Internet Shows/News, with articles and pictures featured in Paranormal magazines/TV. Has appeared in job fairs at schools and Ghost Conferences on Paranormal Investigating/Writer and has been the subject of college papers on the Supernatural/Paranormal. Titled as an Aura Reader-ability to read the energy of a ghost and clairseeing (seeing spirits), it is why she goes first into any haunted place. She also uses ability to help ghosts move to the light.

Gaylen is the author of a semi-autobiographical book that shares her experience with the boogeyman and helps children deal with supernatural trauma. Gaylen reads a segment of the book on the show. The Make Believe: In The Boogeyman Chronicles is available on Amazon.

Twelve-year-old Curt lived in New Castle, California for all his life and thought he knew everything about the town, but he wasn’t familiar with the oldest part, a neighborhood built when the Shasta Dam was constructed. Now he comes to know it up close and on a personal level when he, his mother and baby brother move into the largest house in the old neighborhood.Creepy gargoyle statues outside the front door and two evergreen trees with roots growing out of the ground, clutching their bases, hold Curt’s attention. While not impressed with the neighborhood, he’s thrilled to have his own room again following his parents’ divorce. However, Curt’s interest in his room dwindles as his bed begins to shake, in the absence of any earthquake, and seemingly endless piano music plays throughout the long nights. One night when something from under the bed grabs his leg, Curt knows he needs to get help. His mom attributes his experiences to nightmares and sleepwalking. His classmates have heard the stories of kids disappearing in the night. Curt and his peers form the Monster Busters Club and act fast to protect themselves from the monsters they call “the make believe.”

AFTERLIFEGOESON PARANORMAL GROUP

Being haunted? In the world of the unknown, you are not alone. They are your Paranormal Troubleshooters. One of the unique parts of their team is how they help. They don’t go tramping through your home, keeping you up most of the night just to tell you that your house is haunted. You KNOW that. They investigate, research, help spirits find their way to the light and do a cleansing of your home if needed. Check them out on their website for photos of their many investigations.

THE ISOLATION ROOM Ghost Story

British folksinger David Walton narrates a true ghost story that Fox collected while staying at the Riverside Victorian Bed and Breakfast in Clinton NJ. Fox got this story and several others from one of the owners of the inn, a woman he started calling Auntie Monie. It’s a tale from her childhood when she’d fallen ill with polio and a visitor. We’ll be featuring more ghost stories from her and Clinton NJ in future episodes.

NEW MUSIC

We feature two songs on this episode from old friends. We just can’t get enough of them. David Walton performs a new version of an English ghost song that he originally performed on the first episode of the show, The Unquiet Dead.

We also play a new song from our deep blues guy, Wily Bo Walker & The Rattlin Bone Theatre Show, the burlesque song, Ain’t Hungry No More.

Wily Bo Walker is a solo artist, songwriter, composer and performer noted for his characterful vocals and swaggering ‘live’ performances
Renowned as being a diverse and prolific artist and hailing originally from Glasgow, Scotland, Wily Bo works across many styles and genres. In 2016, the compilation twin album releases ‘The Wily Bo Walker Story Volumes I & II’ were released. Wily Bo Walker released a trilogy of albums in 2015, all of which achieved tremendous reviews across the board in the music industry.

GHOST STORIES DOOR TO DOOR

While investigating the city during a weekend trip, T. Fox Dunham & his wife, Allison Ledbetter took several photographs of the battlefields and shops and may have caught some paranormal activity. Allison sensed something in the corner of an Irish shop. After Allison directed him to the ceiling, Fox took several photos of the same spot and caught what appears to be a light or mist moving into the ceiling. Lighting effects couldn’t quite explain what they saw, nor could they identity an obvious source. Could be paranormal?
