49 – SUMMER OF SPIRITS

LISTEN TO EPISODE 49: SPIRITS OF SUMMER:

We need some spooky stories this time of year. For all of you missing Halloween during this lovely warm season, we bring you a dose of horror to satiate your October desires. Horror authors Phil Thomas & T. Fox Dunham return with episode 49 of Philadelphia’s horror home, What Are You Afraid Of? Horror & Paranormal Show on PARA-X Radio, Friday night 9PM EST and available on all major podcast services.

Fox brings you a new true ghost story about his experiences last wintery March in Clinton, New Jersey while he and his wife Allison lodged at The River Victorian Bed & Breakfast–a gorgeous town and one of America’s most haunted villages. Narrated by British folksinger, David Walton, this story tells of disembodied guests who had their own holiday at the nearly empty house.

We’ve got more CLOWN NEWS, finally as the evil clowns start to thaw for the warm weather. Is it real or just urban legend?

Fox reads part two of his horror story, Die Musik des Teufels, from Grey Matter Press’ horror anthology dedicated to music, Savage Beasts, from editors Anthony Rivera and Sharon Lawson.

Phil recently attended a Philadelphia film festival called Cinemug, and we play another interview with one of the filmmakers there, Genevieve Leonard. We’re here to support Indie art in Philadelphia.

We record episode 50 tonight!

48: PHILLY FOXY HAUNTED SPOOKY HOUR

Episode 48: The Phillie Foxxy Haunted Spooky Hour Live!!!

Well, recorded when it was broadcasted live over Para-X at Comic Zen in Lansdale PA for First Friday. Philadelphia horror hosts T. Fox Dunham & Phil Thomas are live every First Friday on PARA-X Radio with some new stuff and old from our favorite shows. Random guests wander in with their true ghost experiences. On this episode, civil war historian and reenactor Tom Capper joined us with several true paranormal tales from his time in Gettysburg. We also discuss the dark legends of the Slender Man, which was actually just a photo hoax that took on a life of its own, even causing attempted murder.

Image may contain: 2 people, people sitting

We play an old favorite from Wily Bo Walker and the Swamp Music Players, and we play a new song from horror rockers, Nightmare Nancy and the Wizard, plus ghost stories and a reading from T. Fox Dunham’s new gory horror story in Blood Bound Books’ Dead On Arrival III anthology, The Broken Hearted. www.whatareyouafraidofpodcast.com

NIGHTMARE NANCY & THE WIZARD!

From the depths of Nightmare Manor comes Nancy Nightmare and the Wizard, an alternative horror pop/rock duo from Los Angeles. With musical influences that range from alternative rock to cabaret, they bring a macabre sense of humor to every spooky song that they write.

Nancy Nightmare and the Wizard started releasing videos of their original music to YouTube in October of 2015. Whether it’s a song about witches and vampires or a Christmas song about Rudolph going on a murderous rampage, they always strive to put an original spin on spooky themes and imagery. All songs are co-written by the ghoulish duo, with Nancy Nightmare on vocals and The Wizard on guitar.

With 10 songs already released on their YouTube channel and a lot more on the way, they are well on their way to recording their first album. They hope to have the album ready to release at the end of 2017. Until then, they will keep conjuring new music on their YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/c/nancynightmareandthewizard. Stay Spooky!

47: GHOSTS OF WAR

LISTEN TO EPISODE 47: GHOSTS OF WAR

Only the dead know the end of war. And even then the spirits of fallen soldiers dwell in perpetual torment, forever repeating the carnage of the battlefield. Nothing breeds ghost stories like war, and stories of phantom soldiers have been told for as long as war has existed.

The hosts of what Are You Afraid Of? Horror & Paranormal Show, T. Fox Dunham & Phil Thomas, present haunted folklore from the American Revolution, Civil War, World War I & World War II. Also, in support of Indie filmmakers, Phil Thomas interviews local Philly film artist, Veronica Giglio, founder of a new local cinema event in Philadelphia to present the work of the Philly film community.

T. Fox Dunham narrates part 1 of his story, Die Musik des Teufels, from Grey Matter Press’ horror anthology dedicated to music, Savage Beasts. It is a dark story of horrific Nazi experiments and their connection to a desperate father looking to save his son’s life. When will these ethereal soldiers stop fighting? Perhaps they will rest when we finally retire war.

EPISODE 45: WHISPER MEN

Monster hunter Gaylen Chauncey returns for part 2 of her interview on What Are You Afraid Of? Horror & Paranormal Show with horror authors T. Fox Dunham & Phil Thomas. Gaylen shares a personal part of her childhood as she describes an encounter with a veiled creature whom she refers to as the Boogeyman. It nearly took her sister and almost killed her. Medical science can’t explain the damage done to her, and she has spent her life obsessed with this creature, hunting it, making sure it can never hurt a child again. Gaylen also shares some EVPS she’s gathered during her many paranormal investigations, and she reads a part of her novel, The Make Believe: In The Boogeyman Chronicles—a book written to support children who are hunted by these terrible things but are not believed. We bring you two of her collected ghost stories, recorded by our voice actors: The Reflection and The Whisper Men. Gaylen warns of a terrible reality that we defy through denial. Believe her. Children are in danger. This is episode 45 of What Are You Afraid Of? Horror & Paranormal Show. I’M WATCHING YOU

I’m Watching You!

Sent in by Jess G from Los Angeles, California

Listen to the ghost story, read by British folksinger David Walton from Episode 43: WATCHERS:

I was a high school student and my mother’s father, who I was very close to, had just passed away from brain cancer. A couple weeks after his passing, the family (my mother, brother, grandmother) and I were cleaning up and clearing out his home office. I was on the computer making sure I had saved everything I wanted to keep onto my flash drive, since I had been the sole user of the computer for the past several months to do homework on while we had been over helping to care for my grandfather. When I turned the computer on, there was a flashing notification from the printer saying there was a document ready to print. Before I could figure out what document it was, it just began printing on its own. I thought that was odd, but figured it was just a glitch and I stood there waiting for some old homework I had probably forgotten to cancel from the printer to come out of the machine. But instead, a full-sized image of my grandfather (his favorite photo of himself that I had taken by the way) came out, and beneath it, in blood-dripping style font in bright red said very cryptically, “I’M WATCHING YOU”. There was no plausible explanation for that printout. I had used the printer countless times while he had been ill to print homework and never had I ever seen that document before. My family all laughed when they too saw what was coming out of the printer. We all knew it was my grandfather giving us his last joke, his last dramatic hoorah send-off. He was a playful man in life, always doing what he could just for a laugh and even in death he managed to succeed.

44: BOOGEYMAN

LISTEN TO EPISODE 44: BOOGEYMAN

Every culture has a Boogeyman

Boogeyman is a common allusion to a mythical creature in many cultures used by adults to frighten children into good behavior. This monster has no specific appearance, and conceptions about it can vary drastically from household to household within the same community; in many cases, he has no set appearance in the mind of an adult or child, but is simply a non-specific embodiment of terror. Parents may tell their children that if they misbehave, the bogeyman will get them. Bogeymen may target a specific mischief—for instance, a bogeyman that punishes children who suck their thumbs—or general misbehavior, depending on what purpose needs serving. In some cases, the bogeyman is a nickname for the Devil. Bogeyman tales vary by region. The bogeyman is usually a masculine entity, but can be any gender, or simply be androgynous. (From Wikipedia. Read the full article to learn about this infestation.)

On this episode of What Are You Afraid Of? Horror & Paranormal Show, we interview monster hunter & paranormal investigator, Gaylen Chauncey. It is the first part of a two part series which we continue next week with Episode 45: Whisper Men. Monsters have been haunting Gaylen and her identical twin sister since she was a little girl, and now she haunts them back, seeking out families in trouble and investigating cases of missing children and abuse involving the supernatural. She tells her story to hosts T. Fox Dunham and Phil Thomas, sharing intimate details of her search for her childhood tormentor. In addition, she investigates and cleanses houses with her Virginia based paranormal investigation group, AfterLifeGoesOn Paranormal Group.

GAYLEN CHAUNCEY

“All ghosts, no matter how sweet, are parasites.”

– Gaylen Chauncey

Founder Gaylen Chauncey, is an author of ghost stories based on her real life experiences.  “The Make Believe In The Boogeyman Chronicles”, novel is based on her monster encounters. Tour guide at the haunted St. Albans Sanatorium. She has been interviewed by TV/Radio/Internet Shows/News, with articles and pictures featured in Paranormal magazines/TV. Has appeared in job fairs at schools and Ghost Conferences on Paranormal Investigating/Writer and has been the subject of college papers on the Supernatural/Paranormal. Titled as an Aura Reader-ability to read the energy of a ghost and clairseeing (seeing spirits), it is why she goes first into any haunted place. She also uses ability to help ghosts move to the light.

Gaylen is the author of a semi-autobiographical book that shares her experience with the boogeyman and helps children deal with supernatural trauma. Gaylen reads a segment of the book on the show. The Make Believe: In The Boogeyman Chronicles is available on Amazon.

Twelve-year-old Curt lived in New Castle, California for all his life and thought he knew everything about the town, but he wasn’t familiar with the oldest part, a neighborhood built when the Shasta Dam was constructed. Now he comes to know it up close and on a personal level when he, his mother and baby brother move into the largest house in the old neighborhood.Creepy gargoyle statues outside the front door and two evergreen trees with roots growing out of the ground, clutching their bases, hold Curt’s attention. While not impressed with the neighborhood, he’s thrilled to have his own room again following his parents’ divorce. However, Curt’s interest in his room dwindles as his bed begins to shake, in the absence of any earthquake, and seemingly endless piano music plays throughout the long nights. One night when something from under the bed grabs his leg, Curt knows he needs to get help. His mom attributes his experiences to nightmares and sleepwalking. His classmates have heard the stories of kids disappearing in the night. Curt and his peers form the Monster Busters Club and act fast to protect themselves from the monsters they call “the make believe.”

AFTERLIFEGOESON PARANORMAL GROUP

Being haunted? In the world of the unknown, you are not alone. They are your Paranormal Troubleshooters. One of the unique parts of their team is how they help. They don’t go tramping through your home, keeping you up most of the night just to tell you that your house is haunted. You KNOW that. They investigate, research, help spirits find their way to the light and do a cleansing of your home if needed. Check them out on their website for photos of their many investigations.

THE ISOLATION ROOM Ghost Story

British folksinger David Walton narrates a true ghost story that Fox collected while staying at the Riverside Victorian Bed and Breakfast in Clinton NJ. Fox got this story and several others from one of the owners of the inn, a woman he started calling Auntie Monie. It’s a tale from her childhood when she’d fallen ill with polio and a visitor. We’ll be featuring more ghost stories from her and Clinton NJ in future episodes.

The gorgeous interior of this charming B&B.

NEW MUSIC

We feature two songs on this episode from old friends. We just can’t get enough of them. David Walton performs a new version of an English ghost song that he originally performed on the first episode of the show, The Unquiet Dead.

We also play a new song from our deep blues guy, Wily Bo Walker & The Rattlin Bone Theatre Show, the burlesque song, Ain’t Hungry No More.

Wily Bo Walker is a solo artist, songwriter, composer and performer noted for his characterful vocals and swaggering ‘live’ performances
Renowned as being a diverse and prolific artist and hailing originally from Glasgow, Scotland, Wily Bo works across many styles and genres. In 2016, the compilation twin album releases ‘The Wily Bo Walker Story Volumes I & II’ were released. Wily Bo Walker released a trilogy of albums in 2015, all of which achieved tremendous reviews across the board in the music industry.

Join us again next week for part II of this remarkable interview with Gaylen Chauncey. Monsters are real. We blind ourselves to them so we feel safe, but it is denial. Yes, there is something in your closet. Also, watch for us as we record or do live shows from Comic Zen in Lansdale, PA on Frist Fridays in the upcoming months, starting May 5th 2017 at 7PM. Come tell us your ghost stories.

Submitted by Rosie Bell

Culloden, Scotland

Listen to this ghost story read by British folksinger David Walton from Episode 42 – Apocalypse:

My friend and I were staying at a very posh, upmarket hotel in Culloden, a mini Gleneagles Hotel, dotted all over with the private owner’s own beautiful antiques. The reason we had to stay there was no one in the town would take us with our beautiful Doberman, Otto. Well, the three of us were warmly welcomed by the proprietors and we were shown to a beautifully appointed old room with thirteen (I counted them) fluffy American style towels and piles of full sized Roger et Gallet Sandlewood soap. Luxury indeed! We snuggled under our thick duvets in our single beds and soon drifted off to sleep. I was awakened in the middle of the night by loud, distressed barking and I shouted over to my friend to ask what was going on to disturb the dog so much. I was told to piss off and I looked over to where Otto was lying, curled up sound asleep. He lifted his head as if to say piss off too and I went back under the covers. Just on the brink of sleep, I was awakened again by the sound of what seemed to be a giant dog, howling and barking and throwing himself against the door! I was more terrified this time as I realized I was the only one hearing this. I asked if I could get in beside my friend but was told again, in no uncertain terms where to go. Dogs are supposed to hear things that humans can’t but my big dopeydukus wasn’t at all disturbed.

On my return to the Lowlands, I told my daughters and my mother in law about my holiday in the highlands and, on hearing we stayed at Culloden House, my mother in law asked “Did you hear the ghost?” I turned to my daughters and asked “did you tell her?” To which they wanted to know “what, you haven’t told us anything yet!” My mother in law, a country girl herself, said “It’s a ghost dog, separated from its master at the Battle of Culloden and it comes back trying to find him!”

33: DEMONS OF VERMONT

Our artist’s conception of the inhuman horror haunting Kristel and her family in Vermont.

Listen to EPISODE 33: DEMONS IN VERMONT with co-host Kristel Smart

T. Fox Dunham & Phil Thomas continue their tribute to Women in Horror Month in February by featuring paranormal author & demonic victim, Kristel Smart, author of the terrifying account of her family’s demonic oppression in Hinesberg House, Virginia. Her story was also featured as an episode of Syfy’s Paranormal Witness, episode 411 When Hell Freezes Over.

Kristel Smart is a writer, dog lover and horse enthusiast. She has a deep love of nature for both the solace it provides, and the mystery it contains. She currently resides in South Burlington, Vermont with her daughter, Taylor and her Doberman, Murphy. You can learn more about Kristel from Facebook or Goodreads.

This is another episode supporting Women in Horror Month which begins in February, but there are so many talented and tenacious women horror contributors, we wanted to start early. Women in Horror Month is a grass-roots organization supporting events and programming that celebrate women in horror. They will be coming on the show soon to talk about their goals, and we will continue to feature women authors, artists, film makers and actresses for the next few months along with their work.

Kristel Smart joins Phil & Fox as a co-host. Her story begins, as most do, when she, her daughter, her sister and childhood friend all move in together in a beautiful rustic house–their dream house, promising a bright new future. Strange events occur right away: phantom growling, weird telephone calls with no answer, children laughing in the night and dark shadows lurking—shadows with will and purpose. The air reeks of sulfur, and electrical problems cost them a fortune.  Lightbulbs explode even when the power is off! Things get worse when the inhuman entity hurts the health of Kristel’s daughter and terrorizes the family while they were trapped in the house during an ice storm. Phil & Fox talk to Kristel through the episode, learning the details of the haunting and understand the psychological effects of these violating attacks after 15 years. The family is recovering much in the same way as victims of battered spouse syndrome or PTSD.

Listen to the show to learn the whole story and gain a defense against the invisible world hidden in our own–a world of shadows that move in the darkness, watching you. The show dedicates itself to equipping its listeners to be more capable in a universe full of dark forces that gain power through ignorance and skepticism, and they’re here to help the victims of such inhuman forces tell their stories and find some closure through the process of catharsis. That is the mission of What Are You Afraid Of? Horror & Paranormal Show.

Kristel tells us at night it was strongest:

I notice movement in the corner. It’s the shadow. The shadow itself. It’s so dark, a deep void of black, that even the bright bedroom lamp can’t dispel it. It just hangs there, moving in undulating waves. I have this stark realization that it knows I can see it. And it knows I’m scared. I sense its awareness of me. As a general rule, I don’t fear ghosts. But this is no ghost. Such malevolence, it just emanates in waves. I feel helpless, and barely manage a choked, half whispered “Oh…” Then my voice stops. Tears slowly make their way down my face. My whole body is numb. –Excerpt from In Stone by Kristel Stone

The house looked innocent enough. There was nothing to distinguish it from any other quaint, older home nestled within the rural Vermont landscape. For Liz, Charlie, Donna and Willa it was a dream come true; exactly what they needed. Each of them had escaped hardship longing for the comforts of loved ones, hearth and home. The spacious house, the location and the timing all seemed so perfect. But none of them could imagine the horrors that awaited them as the house revealed its secrets. Buy from AMAZON.

Our British folksinger, David Walton, narrates excerpts from some of Kristel’s nocturnal visits from In Stone, which is available here at Amazon. David also sings a classic British Folksong, The Cruel Mother.

A woman gives birth to one or two illegitimate children (usually sons) in the woods, kills them, and buries them. On her return trip home, she sees a child, or children, playing, and says that if they were hers, she would dress them in various fine garments and otherwise take care of them. The children tell her that when they were hers, she would not dress them so but murdered them. Frequently they say she will be damned for it. –The Cruel Mother from Wikipedia

A SHORT TERM EFFECT

From FilmZero

Our latest film is an eight minute short entitled “A Short Term Effect” that we shot this past October. With recent quality contributions to horror such as The Conjuring, Annabelle, You & #39. Next, Lights Out, and Don’t Breathe, it compelled us to do a series of shorts throughout 2017.

It’s a fun ghost story involving a depressed man, some haunted woods and a chance encounter with the girl of his dreams—but will he be able to close the deal? We will be posting other short films every few months as long as people are enjoying them. Please check them out.

Author Tim Waggoner

Part medical horror, part supernatural suspense, MERCY is a hard-hitting fever dream of a novel. I enjoyed the hell out of it!” ~ Tim Waggoner, author of The Way of All Flesh and Eat The Night

Pain and poetry flow in equal measure through these pages. Dunham’s prose strikes deep and hits all the right notes. MERCY is unforgettably vivid.” ~ David Dunwoody, author of Hell Walks and The 3 Egos

William Saint is dying of cancer. On most days death seems like a humane alternative to the treatment. Stricken with fever, William is rushed to Mercy—notorious as a place to send the sickest of the poor and uninsured to be forgotten—and finds the hospital in even worse condition than his previous visit. The grounds are unkempt, the foundation is cracking, and like the wild mushrooms sprouting from fissures of decay around it, something is growing inside the hospital. Something dark. It’s feeding on the sickness and sustaining itself on the staff, changing them. And now it wants Willie.

This was my death.

Life is an addiction.

Love is the only force that is real. Read . . . and understand what I saw. I put it in metaphor. You do not understand what you do not understand.
