LISTEN TO EPISODE 44: BOOGEYMAN
Every culture has a Boogeyman
Boogeyman is a common allusion to a mythical creature in many cultures used by adults to frighten children into good behavior. This monster has no specific appearance, and conceptions about it can vary drastically from household to household within the same community; in many cases, he has no set appearance in the mind of an adult or child, but is simply a non-specific embodiment of terror. Parents may tell their children that if they misbehave, the bogeyman will get them. Bogeymen may target a specific mischief—for instance, a bogeyman that punishes children who suck their thumbs—or general misbehavior, depending on what purpose needs serving. In some cases, the bogeyman is a nickname for the Devil. Bogeyman tales vary by region. The bogeyman is usually a masculine entity, but can be any gender, or simply be androgynous. (From Wikipedia. Twelve-year-old Curt lived in New Castle, California for all his life and thought he knew everything about the town, but he wasn’t familiar with the oldest part, a neighborhood built when the Shasta Dam was constructed. Now he comes to know it up close and on a personal level when he, his mother and baby brother move into the largest house in the old neighborhood.Creepy gargoyle statues outside the front door and two evergreen trees with roots growing out of the ground, clutching their bases, hold Curt’s attention. While not impressed with the neighborhood, he’s thrilled to have his own room again following his parents’ divorce. However, Curt’s interest in his room dwindles as his bed begins to shake, in the absence of any earthquake, and seemingly endless piano music plays throughout the long nights. One night when something from under the bed grabs his leg, Curt knows he needs to get help. His mom attributes his experiences to nightmares and sleepwalking. His classmates have heard the stories of kids disappearing in the night. Curt and his peers form the Monster Busters Club and act fast to protect themselves from the monsters they call “the make believe.”

THE ISOLATION ROOM Ghost Story
British folksinger David Walton narrates a true ghost story that Fox collected while staying at the Riverside Victorian Bed and Breakfast in Clinton NJ. Fox got this story and several others from one of the owners of the inn, a woman he started calling Auntie Monie. It’s a tale from her childhood when she’d fallen ill with polio and a visitor. We’ll be featuring more ghost stories from her and Clinton NJ in future episodes.
The gorgeous interior of this charming B&B.

We also play a new song from our deep blues guy, Wily Bo Walker & The Rattlin Bone Theatre Show, the burlesque song, Ain’t Hungry No More.

FANGORIA gives MERCY 3.5 out 4 Skulls – “Dunham has channeled his many brushes with the other side into the exquisitely rendered, lyrical supernatural hospital thriller MERCY.“ READ FULL REVIEW HERE.
“Part medical horror, part supernatural suspense, MERCY is a hard-hitting fever dream of a novel. I enjoyed the hell out of it!” ~ Tim Waggoner, author of The Way of All Flesh and Eat The Night
“Pain and poetry flow in equal measure through these pages. Dunham’s prose strikes deep and hits all the right notes. MERCY is unforgettably vivid.” ~ David Dunwoody, author of Hell Walks and The 3 Egos
William Saint is dying of cancer. On most days death seems like a humane alternative to the treatment. Stricken with fever, William is rushed to Mercy—notorious as a place to send the sickest of the poor and uninsured to be forgotten—and finds the hospital in even worse condition than his previous visit. The grounds are unkempt, the foundation is cracking, and like the wild mushrooms sprouting from fissures of decay around it, something is growing inside the hospital. Something dark. It’s feeding on the sickness and sustaining itself on the staff, changing them. And now it wants Willie.
This was my death.
Life is an addiction.
Love is the only force that is real. Read . . . and understand what I saw. I put it in metaphor. You do not understand what you do not understand.
