I’M WATCHING YOU

I’m Watching You!

Sent in by Jess G from Los Angeles, California

Listen to the ghost story, read by British folksinger David Walton from Episode 43: WATCHERS:

I was a high school student and my mother’s father, who I was very close to, had just passed away from brain cancer. A couple weeks after his passing, the family (my mother, brother, grandmother) and I were cleaning up and clearing out his home office. I was on the computer making sure I had saved everything I wanted to keep onto my flash drive, since I had been the sole user of the computer for the past several months to do homework on while we had been over helping to care for my grandfather. When I turned the computer on, there was a flashing notification from the printer saying there was a document ready to print. Before I could figure out what document it was, it just began printing on its own. I thought that was odd, but figured it was just a glitch and I stood there waiting for some old homework I had probably forgotten to cancel from the printer to come out of the machine. But instead, a full-sized image of my grandfather (his favorite photo of himself that I had taken by the way) came out, and beneath it, in blood-dripping style font in bright red said very cryptically, “I’M WATCHING YOU”. There was no plausible explanation for that printout. I had used the printer countless times while he had been ill to print homework and never had I ever seen that document before. My family all laughed when they too saw what was coming out of the printer. We all knew it was my grandfather giving us his last joke, his last dramatic hoorah send-off. He was a playful man in life, always doing what he could just for a laugh and even in death he managed to succeed.

44: BOOGEYMAN

LISTEN TO EPISODE 44: BOOGEYMAN

Every culture has a Boogeyman

Boogeyman is a common allusion to a mythical creature in many cultures used by adults to frighten children into good behavior. This monster has no specific appearance, and conceptions about it can vary drastically from household to household within the same community; in many cases, he has no set appearance in the mind of an adult or child, but is simply a non-specific embodiment of terror. Parents may tell their children that if they misbehave, the bogeyman will get them. Bogeymen may target a specific mischief—for instance, a bogeyman that punishes children who suck their thumbs—or general misbehavior, depending on what purpose needs serving. In some cases, the bogeyman is a nickname for the Devil. Bogeyman tales vary by region. The bogeyman is usually a masculine entity, but can be any gender, or simply be androgynous. (From Wikipedia. On this episode of What Are You Afraid Of? Horror & Paranormal Show, we interview monster hunter & paranormal investigator, Gaylen Chauncey. It is the first part of a two part series which we continue next week with Episode 45: Whisper Men. Monsters have been haunting Gaylen and her identical twin sister since she was a little girl, and now she haunts them back, seeking out families in trouble and investigating cases of missing children and abuse involving the supernatural. She tells her story to hosts T. Fox Dunham and Phil Thomas, sharing intimate details of her search for her childhood tormentor. In addition, she investigates and cleanses houses with her Virginia based paranormal investigation group, AfterLifeGoesOn Paranormal Group.

Twelve-year-old Curt lived in New Castle, California for all his life and thought he knew everything about the town, but he wasn’t familiar with the oldest part, a neighborhood built when the Shasta Dam was constructed. Now he comes to know it up close and on a personal level when he, his mother and baby brother move into the largest house in the old neighborhood.Creepy gargoyle statues outside the front door and two evergreen trees with roots growing out of the ground, clutching their bases, hold Curt’s attention. While not impressed with the neighborhood, he’s thrilled to have his own room again following his parents’ divorce. However, Curt’s interest in his room dwindles as his bed begins to shake, in the absence of any earthquake, and seemingly endless piano music plays throughout the long nights. One night when something from under the bed grabs his leg, Curt knows he needs to get help. His mom attributes his experiences to nightmares and sleepwalking. His classmates have heard the stories of kids disappearing in the night. Curt and his peers form the Monster Busters Club and act fast to protect themselves from the monsters they call “the make believe.”

AFTERLIFEGOESON PARANORMAL GROUP

Being haunted? In the world of the unknown, you are not alone. They are your Paranormal Troubleshooters. One of the unique parts of their team is how they help. THE ISOLATION ROOM Ghost Story

British folksinger David Walton narrates a true ghost story that Fox collected while staying at the Riverside Victorian Bed and Breakfast in Clinton NJ. Fox got this story and several others from one of the owners of the inn, a woman he started calling Auntie Monie. It’s a tale from her childhood when she’d fallen ill with polio and a visitor. We’ll be featuring more ghost stories from her and Clinton NJ in future episodes.

NEW MUSIC

We feature two songs on this episode from old friends. We just can’t get enough of them. David Walton performs a new version of an English ghost song that he originally performed on the first episode of the show, The Unquiet Dead.

We also play a new song from our deep blues guy, Wily Bo Walker & The Rattlin Bone Theatre Show, the burlesque song, Ain’t Hungry No More.

Wily Bo Walker is a solo artist, songwriter, composer and performer noted for his characterful vocals and swaggering ‘live’ performances
Renowned as being a diverse and prolific artist and hailing originally from Glasgow, Scotland, Wily Bo works across many styles and genres. In 2016, the compilation twin album releases ‘The Wily Bo Walker Story Volumes I & II’ were released. Wily Bo Walker released a trilogy of albums in 2015, all of which achieved tremendous reviews across the board in the music industry.

Join us again next week for part II of this remarkable interview with Gaylen Chauncey. Monsters are real. We blind ourselves to them so we feel safe, but it is denial. Yes, there is something in your closet. Also, watch for us as we record or do live shows from Comic Zen in Lansdale, PA on Frist Fridays in the upcoming months, starting May 5th 2017 at 7PM. Come tell us your ghost stories.

Pain and poetry flow in equal measure through these pages. Dunham’s prose strikes deep and hits all the right notes. MERCY is unforgettably vivid.” ~ David Dunwoody, author of Hell Walks and The 3 Egos

William Saint is dying of cancer. On most days death seems like a humane alternative to the treatment. Stricken with fever, William is rushed to Mercy—notorious as a place to send the sickest of the poor and uninsured to be forgotten—and finds the hospital in even worse condition than his previous visit. The grounds are unkempt, the foundation is cracking, and like the wild mushrooms sprouting from fissures of decay around it, something is growing inside the hospital. Something dark. It’s feeding on the sickness and sustaining itself on the staff, changing them. And now it wants Willie.

DID YOU HEAR THE GHOSTS?

Did You Hear the Ghosts?

Submitted by Rosie Bell

Culloden, Scotland

Listen to this ghost story read by British folksinger David Walton from Episode 42 – Apocalypse:

My friend and I were staying at a very posh, upmarket hotel in Culloden, a mini Gleneagles Hotel, dotted all over with the private owner’s own beautiful antiques. The reason we had to stay there was no one in the town would take us with our beautiful Doberman, Otto. Well, the three of us were warmly welcomed by the proprietors and we were shown to a beautifully appointed old room with thirteen (I counted them) fluffy American style towels and piles of full sized Roger et Gallet Sandlewood soap. Luxury indeed! We snuggled under our thick duvets in our single beds and soon drifted off to sleep. I was awakened in the middle of the night by loud, distressed barking and I shouted over to my friend to ask what was going on to disturb the dog so much. I was told to piss off and I looked over to where Otto was lying, curled up sound asleep. He lifted his head as if to say piss off too and I went back under the covers. Just on the brink of sleep, I was awakened again by the sound of what seemed to be a giant dog, howling and barking and throwing himself against the door! I was more terrified this time as I realized I was the only one hearing this. I asked if I could get in beside my friend but was told again, in no uncertain terms where to go. Dogs are supposed to hear things that humans can’t but my big dopeydukus wasn’t at all disturbed.

On my return to the Lowlands, I told my daughters and my mother in law about my holiday in the highlands and, on hearing we stayed at Culloden House, my mother in law asked “Did you hear the ghost?” I turned to my daughters and asked “did you tell her?” To which they wanted to know “what, you haven’t told us anything yet!” My mother in law, a country girl herself, said “It’s a ghost dog, separated from its master at the Battle of Culloden and it comes back trying to find him!”

42: APOCALYPSE

Listen to Episode 42 – Apocalypse:

Humans are obsessed with the end of the world. Many times in history has some prophet predicted the apocalypse, and yet history continues. On this episode of What Are You Afraid Of? hosts Phil Thomas & T. Fox Dunham discuss the many ways the end might have come and why people find the idea exciting. For centuries, religious cadres and fringe groups have gained credibility by making predictions of doom and disaster. Over the last century, small congregations have sold their possessions and gathered together to await the rapture. It can overwhelm society too, such as the Y2K computer issue and the end of the Mayan calendar in 2012. Why do we love the idea of the end of the world so much?

And they worshipped the beast–from Revelations

The show’s got ghosts too! Rosie Bell, a friend from Scotland, shares a story of a ghost encounter on holiday in the UK. The show was also honored by found of Afterlife Goes On Paranormal Group, Gaylen Chauncey from Virginia. Gaylen has shared and narrated several of her most compelling EVPS (Electric Voice Phenomena) thought to be the voices of spirits recorded during paranormal investigations. These were recorded at the Waverly Hills Sanatorium.
