PLAY PODCAST 23: GHOST HUNT

Recorded on location at the Fort Mifflin Paranormal Investigators Evening

fort-moundPhil & Fox traveled out to historic site Fort Mifflin this week to attend and report on one of their public ghost hunting evenings. 70 supernatural seekers attended the Revolutionary War site after dark. Fort Mifflin is one of the most haunted sites in the country, visited by many groups of famous ghost hunters. Mifflin is one America’s oldest forts , once serving as a river fort in the American Revolution, a prisoner of war camp in the Civil War and even a refueling station in WWI. The hosts head out, interview ghost hunters as they recorded paranormal data and gathered ghost stories about the fort.

While at the fort, they recorded the experiences of several ghost hunters, related the history of the fort and relayed several ghost stories reported by visitors of the last few decades. One tells the story of a Phantom Guide who appears to visitors at Fort Mifflin and gives them a small tour when no staff member is scheduled. Another of their many stories laments a woman who hung herself, The Screaming Woman. A Judge still holds court in the barracks. A Blacksmith puts down the hammer when you touch his tools. And many more.

The hosts were joined that evening by members of the paranormal investigation team SPIRIT of PA or Southeast Paranormal Investigation & Research Team. They told them several stories of their experiences at the fort including an encounter with an entity they called, The Judge–a lingering spirit T. Fox Dunham may have encountered while standing in the dark in the tunnels. He shared his experience on this episode.

Phil took several photos, and he may have caught something. Now this is an example of what some call an orb or others more skeptical, a light anomaly. They could not deduce any source for the glowing object displayed against the building, and many in the paranormal community would deem it an ‘orb.’

A possible orb or light anomaly.

A possible orb or light anomaly.

Fox asked one of our band of seekers, Katie Jordan, what she thought:

“It’s most likely dust or a bug. I think the notion of an “orb” has gotten out or control. 99.999% of “orbs” are easily explained through lighting and camera settings. I do believe that energy is always around, and maybe it does ball up like that sometimes, but my teams and I are not subscribers to actual “orbs.”

Katie is a serious scholar when it comes to understanding the otherworld. She was the subject of a great article recently talking about Samhain and being a pagan. Katie’s Article.

SMILIN’ JACK

Phil Thomas debuted his English folklore story called Smilin’ Jack, about a pumpkin and a scarecrow and a town’s curse.

Tennessee’s local legend explains the strange case of Smiling Jack, a jack o’ lantern scarecrow who either smiles or frowns, depending on the actions of the local townspeople. As long as Rob could remember Jack rested against his wooden post, grinning from side to side.

No one knew where the scarecrow came from, and even Mr. Farley, the cornfield’s owner made no claim to him. But for close to fifty-years Jack showed up every October and hung around for thirty-one days, disappearing on November 1st.  Until he vanished, Rob made sure to pass Jack every day from school to see if he was smiling, and if all was well within their town. Rob actually began to doubt the legend, considering Jack always looked cheerful, until one particular year.

Part medical horror, part supernatural suspense, MERCY is a hard-hitting fever dream of a novel. I enjoyed the hell out of it!” ~ Tim Waggoner, author of The Way of All Flesh and Eat The Night

Pain and poetry flow in equal measure through these pages. Dunham’s prose strikes deep and hits all the right notes. MERCY is unforgettably vivid.” ~ David Dunwoody, author of Hell Walks and The 3 Egos

William Saint is dying of cancer. On most days death seems like a humane alternative to the treatment. Stricken with fever, William is rushed to Mercy—notorious as a place to send the sickest of the poor and uninsured to be forgotten—and finds the hospital in even worse condition than his previous visit. The grounds are unkempt, the foundation is cracking, and like the wild mushrooms sprouting from fissures of decay around it, something is growing inside the hospital. Something dark. It’s feeding on the sickness and sustaining itself on the staff, changing them. And now it wants Willie.

This was my death.

Life is an addiction.

Love is the only force that is real.

Read . . . and understand what I saw. I put it in metaphor. You do not understand what you do not

understand.
